My Little Run Through Central Park...

I got up at 5:30am yesterday to take the subway into the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Super nice area, I must add. The picture to the left is of my division of the starting line. I think there were 10,000+ women there to run. I had never been inside Central Park before and it was absolutely awesome! The lake, the boat house, the MET, the merry-go-round. Tons of people chewing you on! It was pretty hot though, they actually cancelled the full marathon due to heat. I didn't do too bad - I did the 13.1 miles in about 2.5 hours :-) Very proud of myself since I wasn't even training for it. I have another 1/2 marathon scheduled for next Sunday in Long Island...stay posted!

The weather here has been awesome. Very hot actually - I turned the AC on this weekend. I am currently sitting on my patio sipping wine and blogging away. Oh, in my bikini top and shorts too, trying very hard to get a bit of a tan. Don't worry - I would NOT be out here in the sisters in the sun if the neighbors were out and about, heehee

Here are so more pictures of Park Ave (with sprind flowers) and the Trump Tower...

Freakin' Awesome Day in NYC

It was incredible outside today. Sunny - a bit humid, but it will only get worse. People everywhere enjoying the weather. I love my apartment complex/building. In the courtyard everyone gets their grills out and socializes all day - I should fit in fine with all the wine :-) I slept in today (finally), had coffee and made breakfast. I did a "quick" walk with Nobie and was very proud that she pissed on the concrete - no tree or grass in site. She is coming along fine! Coke sunned on the patio and meowed his high pitch like normal....

Then me and Nobie ran-walked to the park. She really can't keep up! I have to jog, walk beside her. She does get a bit more animated there though. I let her lay down in the muddy puddle because - she loves dirty water and needed to cool off. Plus, she is a dog and was just having fun. Who I am to say she can't? I am sure everyone looked at me weird. I used my shirt to wipe off most of the mud and threw it in the park trash can. Don't worry - I had on a running tank underneath :-)

I am running a 1/2 marathon in central park tomorrow. It is an all women run - I couldn't sign up for the marathon because it is only over 40!?!?! That is ok though, cuz I am so not even ready for the 13.1 miles I am gonna do tomorrow. I figure it will kick start my "get-my-ass-back-into-gear" mode. I also signed up for a 1/2 marathon in Long Island for next Sunday. That one has boys :-)

So, I took the subway into the city to go to the runner's expo and get my stuff for tomorrow morning. I took my time and walked around 5ht Ave. too. Tons of shops, great sun and just enjoying being in Manhattan. Still kinda weird that it is so close and that I live in NYC!!! Here are a few pics I took at 5th Ave and Broadway. Even with the NYC city tax, I love it here so far - everyone come visit. I can always use a partner in crime!!!!!

Yankees rained out :-(

It rained all day long yesterday, so no baseball. I was really disappointed because I wanted to see the new stadium. I am sure I will wind up going to more than one game there this season anyway....

So, Jeffrey and I went into the city anyway. Bar hopped around Madison Square Gardens / Empire State Building area. The weather was bad, so we didn't actually go to the top of the ESB. But the city does not lack for good bars. This one place had awesome music - 90s !!!

The New York Rangers and the Dallas Mavericks both lost last night. And I only got four hours of sleep....ugh, exhausted. Currently eating left over pizza, waiting for 90210 to start!!!!

Above is Empire State Building from the street - couldn't even see the top of it due to fog & rain.

New Mets Stadium

Jeffrey came to visit - his family lives in Long Island and he is up here for an engagement party...Anyway, he is staying with me to hang out and go to baseball. Ok, drink too. Last night we went out with some people from work, tons of fun. Tonight- pizzeria and who knows. The game was fun, but the Mets lost :-( Yankees tomorrow!

Critters

Coke is enjoying Brooklyn - just give him some sun and he is happy. Thank god for the patio!

Noble is getting used to her twice daily walks. She tends to get a bit tired too quickly I think - we gotta build up her stamina. I tried jogging with her to the park and back, but she was exhausted and dragging (only a 30 minute run!)...
I have never been so amused by my own intimate knowledge of her daily bowel movements. There was no "action" on this morning's walk. This evening I was like "come on! are you ok?" Finally - she dropped a deuce (for lack of a better description). I literally thought "Yea! Way to go Noble". The worst part was that I was a bit DISAPPOINTED in the small size. OMG, I need to go out more.
One more thing - we were walking and I saw her pick something up with her mouth. The look on her face was classic! She stopped and peered over at me : "Did she notice that? Is she paying attention?". Of course I noticed! I am her mother, duh! I made her stop and drop the street trash that turned out to be a chicken wing. Hahaha, sneaky little *itch.

Brooklyn Pub Crawl

Went out with Brett (aka Dr. Levitzke, my new boss) and a group of his friends last night - just for some "beers". Yeah right, I should know better than that! Started off at Ceol, the Irish pub across from the clinic. Next, late night dinner at Bar Tabac and lots of wine. Finally - Camp. Not even sure what time we all passed out. But, I did make it into work this morning to check on patients :-) Only took me all freaking day to recover!!! But, I officially love Brooklyn....

3rd Day of Work...

Well, yesterday wasn't completely crazy busy. I had the one hospitalized patient that was doing better and two new appointments...but nothing stayed .

Today - that was an completely different story. I was supposed to only have one MRI/spinal tap. BUT - then there were two ER transfers, one walk-in ER and another dog that I saw yesterday that got worse....I did a surgery, 2 MRIs, discharged 4 patients and hospitalized 2. I worked almost 12 hours straight. That is not unheard of, especially with my previous ER work early in my career. But this day shift stuff is CRAZY!!!! Being that busy makes me absolutely exhausted. I promist to take pictures of my patients tomorrow and post them. They are so freaking cute!

So, this picture to the right is the little strip of grass two blocks down from my apartment where Noble will actually pee and poop. She still refuses to go on the tree trunks and concrete. There is a park down the street....have I said this already??? But, I was too tired to walk all the way to the park tonight. Plus, I bought a bottle of wine before I took the subway home from work...

More from Brooklyn tomorrow I hope. I am looking forward to the weekend...there are so many things to see here and I want to make it into the City again :-) Miss everyone

First day of work!!!!

Well, I had the first day of work today. It was actually great - really busy, which I absolutely love, love, love! I had three appointments and one transfer from the overnight emergency service. All the people at work are tons of fun and I just love getting to neurology cases again. The best ones are the really weird ones where even I have to think hard to figure out what is wrong. Tons of cats here too, which is different than Colorado or Texas :-) AND I already have one appointment set up for tomorrow...so I can't wait to get back at it tomorrow.

So - the torts are also happy here in Brooklyn. Eating like champs :-) Just in case anyone else was worried...

This just makes me laugh

Ok, I had to upload this one. Shout out to Brooke - my future roommate and partner in crime from the drive to Denver to Brooklyn!!!! This was in a Motel 6 somewhere in Ohio (I think). Crown just goes so well with Dr. Pepper and tastes so freakin' good after driving for 16 hours.

Monday

For those who don't know ... New York City is NOT just Manhattan!!! I live in Brooklyn and the new hospital is in Brooklyn too. Specifically the northwest corner of Brooklyn - I can see Manhattan from the street, depending on where I am.

  • Today I went to the "local" Wal-Mart. I had to move my car anyway (depending on the day, NYC cleans the streets - left vs. right - so you have to move your car every few days) so found the closest Wal-Mart on-line. Yes, that makes me white trash!!!!
  • There is a Target within walking / subway distance, but Wal-Mart is cheaper :-)
  • It took two unloading trips (from the car to the apartment) with my cart, I should hope I don't have to go back for another month. Geez!

I got wireless set up in the apartment and it is raining, so likely gonna stay in. I start the new job tomorrow and am very excited. An update tomorrow for sure!!!!!

Brooklyn walk

Noble and I walked from the apartment down to the Brooklyn promenade. This is a strip along the water where you can see Manhattan, the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the statue of Liberty. Very cool - also walked through a few parks on the way to and back. My feet and legs are sore and Nobie is exhuasted too. The round trip took about 3 hours. Hopefully I will sleep great tonight! Good thing I have cold beer in the fridge :-)

On my way out -

Heading into the "city" - that is what apparently New Yorkers call Manhattan....meeting some friends from work at Otto's Shrunken Head. Sounds interesting...taking the subway and printing off directions on line. The whole house is unpacked, put away and cleaned. Noble is also doing great with the outside thing. More soon - miss everybody.

Thanks to Jillian

Left: Manhattan from the sky
Right: Fort Green Park
I was reading one of my best friend's blogs tonight (miss you Jillian and the boys) - when I thought "that looks like fun". Since I have had a very recent crazy turn to my own life, I decided to put it down into photos and words. Not sure how many will want to know about it, or how long I may have interesting stories...
I can not take credit for any of the above pictures, but will be taking them on a daily basis now. The left is a photo from Angela's airplane when she came to hang out during my interview. The right is a web photo of the park right down the street from my house. It does look like that, but will be even better come spring with everything being green instead of dead and leaf-less.
Noble wouldn't pee or poop outside in the city for two days. I am trying to wean her by going to the park and areas of actual grass/yard. She is VERY MUCH apposed to relieving herself on the concert or the square dirt around the street trees.
Coke is adjusting just fine actually - he sits in the window, goes on the balcony and pretty much lounges around the apartment wherever he wants to. Meow, meow, meow - squalk, squalk, squalk - all when I am trying to sleep.
A short list of how things are different in New York than ANYWHERE I have ever lived before (Florida, Texas, Colorado):
1 - My feet hurt after unpacking and walking around the apartment that only has hardwood floors. They feel swollen, which makes me feel old.
2 - I actually have to walk the dog, not just let her out. And, I pick up her poop like a good New Yorker.
3 - Grocery stores. This one can be really long. But let's just say - no more buying in bulk or having a lot of choices.
4 - Rain. NY has seasons. We are currently in Spring. April showers bring May flowers.
5 - I can walk everywhere in about two seconds. Liquor store, groceries, mani/pedi, restaurant, etc.
6 - Subway, enough said.
7 - Manhattan, enough said.
More tomorrow, I think. I have officially unpacked everything and hung pictures. I need to clean the apartment tomorrow and have plans with people from work tomorrow night! I have more stories about Brooke and the stupid boys in Brooklyn, but will save those for another night.
Peace out!
